Indus Commission report discussed

NEW DELHI MAY 29. The Indo-Pakistan meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission, which entered the second day today, discussed the annual report of the Commission till March 2003.

According to sources, the discussions have so far been centred around the annual report on the activities of the Commission through last year, flood flows, data on rivers and future plan of action including tours by technical teams. India makes special arrangements for providing flood data to Pakistan between July and October.

The report is likely to be finalised today, although the talks will spill over tomorrow.

The meeting is taking place close after a special meeting in February on the run-of-the-river Baglihar hydel project on the Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir when Pakistan had put India on notice for bringing in neutral experts for what they alleged to be violation of the treaty in the design of the project. India denied any violation and insisted on sorting out the issue "amicably and mutually". The Baglihar project would augment electricity to the power-starved State.
