Andhra Pradesh
By Our Staff Reporter
Mr. Naidu, who was here to chair the party's three-day `Mahanadu', took some time off early this morning to declare open the facilities built here and on Tirumala, which have been waiting for quite some time for inauguration. The complex, housing a multi-purpose indoor stadium with four shuttle courts, a basketball court, a volleyball court, two synthetic turf lawn tennis courts and space to accommodate four tables for the table tennis event, also has a 450-metre jogging track, a skating rink, a weight-lifting platform, dressing rooms, toilets, a cafeteria, a dormitory for 70 persons, a fitness room and a children's park. These apart, a six-lane swimming pool of 25 m to 15 m dimension is in place for aquatic sports. The complex was built by Larsen & Toubro Limited in a record time of six months with the funds provided by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (Rs.2.25 cr), Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (Rs.1.25 cr.) and Sri Venkateswara University (Rs.1 cr.) on the 4.5 acre land offered by the Tirupati municipality and the Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA). It is said to be the only one of its size and kind in Rayalaseema and hence is widely expected to give a thrust to sporting activity especially in Tirupati, which has four universities. However, the absence of a proper audience gallery in the spellbinding edifice to seat sufficient number of sports enthusiasts was too striking to be missed. It naturally fell in the eyes of the Chief Minister, who expressed his dissatisfaction with the district Minister, B. Gopalakrishna Reddy. He also dropped enough hints on the need to have a meeting on this issue with the concerned officials soon.
