MP's exit no threat to BJP: Acharya

By M.Raghuram

MANGALORE MAY 29. The exit of Vijay Sankeshwar, MP, from the BJP will have no effect on the party in the State, especially in coastal districts, according to the Vice-President of the State unit, V.S. Acharya.

Dr. Acharya told The Hindu on Thursday that Mr. Sankeshwar's allegation that the Centre was neglecting the State in terms of development was unfounded. It was unfair on his part to accuse the Centre of adopting a step-motherly attitude towards the State. Giving a list of projects sanctioned by the Centre to the State, Dr. Acharya said Karnataka got one of the largest shares of the Prime Minister's ambitious Golden Quadrilateral Road Project apart from various railway projects, including the recently completed Bellary-Toranagallu-Ranjitpur link. Mr. Sankeshwar's constituency got a number of rural development and self-employment projects.

He said Mr. Sankeshwar, being a seasoned political leader, should not have abandoned the party which had given him support to improve his strength in the State. Asked if there would be any fallout in the district due to Mr. Sankeshwar's exit from the party, he said the concept of regional parties was taking a severe beating in today's political scenario, and the BJP, which had emerged as the largest party in the NDA, would emerge stronger in the State.
