Karnataka-Bangalore
By Our Special Correspondent
He told presspersons here today that Andhra Pradesh had no reason to object to the construction of the dam to supply drinking water to 300 villages in the Bagepalli Assembly segment. Mr. Sampangi said drinking water being provided from borewells contained excess fluoride, and nearly 25,000 people, including women and children, in these villages were suffering from fluorosis. He ridiculed the Andhra Pradesh Government for objecting to the construction of the dam across the Chitravati, which did not violate the 1892 Madras Agreement. The pact stipulated that no dam should be constructed towards the eastern part of the Chelur region within 10 km. from the Andhra Pradesh border. He said Karnataka did not violate the agreement as the proposed dam was towards the southern region of Bagepalli and located 18 km. from the Andhra Pradesh border. Mr. Sampangi said that he had submitted memorandums in this regard to the President, the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, and the Governor.A large number of villagers suffering from fluorosis were present at the press conference.
