LONDON: A London producer has announced plans for a lavish musical version of The Lord of the Rings, the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy that has become a cinematic hit. Kevin Wallace, the producer, said on Wednesday that the West End production was budgeted at £8 million, topping the current champion, the £6.5 million pound production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Producers are aiming for a premiere early in 2005. Casting is scheduled for early 2004 for the show, which has already been in development for 18 months.
