This Day That Age
The biggest sensation of the Australian cricket tour happened in Manchester where the visitors played Lancashire. Umpire P. Corrall no-balled fast bowler Ray Lindwall for "dragging." Lindwall and Corrall exchanged words. At the end of the over, after Lindwall had snatched his sweater from Corrall, the umpire went and spoke to Australia's captain, Hassett. Everybody thought Corrall had reported Lindwall. But Hassett, denying that view, said, "Mr. Corrall wanted Lindwall to land his backfoot an incredibly long way back from the line." Jack Fingleton wrote: "Corrall is a former Leicester wicket-keeper whom Washbrook almost killed before the War, fracturing his skull with a hook stroke. Corrall did not play for two years after that. My information is that he is most meticulous about no-balling, holding very strong opinion about dragging. He no-balled Statham three times today, and each time he showed Statham a mark over the line."
