CHENNAI MAY 29. A police commando constable stabbed his wife to death before immolating himself at their Triplicane Police Quarters flat this morning. The couple have a child aged 18-months.

S.K. Natarajan, belonging to Vellore and a driver on medical leave, was staying with his wife Devi (26) and their daughter, Jayapreetha, on the third floor of the quarters.

The couple used to have frequent quarrels, police said and added that after staying away from her husband for three months, Devi returned home only yesterday. Neighbours said around 10.30 a.m., they heard Devi's loud cries. A few minutes later, they noticed thick smoke billowing out of their house and alerted the police immediately. Policemen forced their way into Natarajan's house and found the constable in flames. They managed to put out the flames and rushed him to the KMC Hospital.

Natarajan, who sustained 80 per cent burns, died at the hospital. The constable dropped a sickle used in the murder inside a water drum and bolted the door from inside. He left his daughter outside the house.
