PM's 'threat'

Sir, — The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's "threat" of "retirement" on foreign soil can be termed a curious move aimed at silencing his critics and detractors back home. Every time an India-Pakistan meet transpires, be it at the highest level or at the diplomatic level, public hopes rise, but only to take a nasty fall in the "war of words" that ensues! In this scenario, perhaps, Mr. Vajpayee strongly believes that only a decisive end to the Indo-Pak. skirmish can save his party the blushes in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections!

Sulochana Jayaraman,
Coimbatore, T.N.

Sir, — The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, has rightly stressed the need for the walls to go. India and Pakistan have common heritage and had lived like brothers 50 years ago. Partition took place due to historical blunders and ego clashes. Still marriages take place between people of the two countries. Why not we trace back our history and live unitedly?

S.A. Srinivasa Sarma,
Mumbai
