Letters to the Editor
Sir, The BJP chief, Venkaiah Naidu's statement at a meeting in Rampur and his subsequent backtracking quoting `misunderstanding' by the media is a sad commentary on the state of political affairs. This brings to mind a few other instances in the recent past where leaders had not been misquoted for sure, but refuted the reports almost immediately, owing to pressure. Are all these not mere voter-wooing measures?
Jeyshree Jayaraman,
Sir, This is with reference to the statement made by the BJP chief, Venkaiah Naidu, on the Ayodhya issue. Initially, he proclaimed that one possible solution to the issue was to build a mosque besides the temple, then he said his statement was misunderstood because he spoke in Hindi. I hope the BJP chief knows that most of our journalists know Hindi, and it is not possible for all of them to misunderstand what he said. Then he said that what he meant was a mosque to be built in a nearby area which had a reasonable Muslim population which, of course, the Muslims will not accept. Such conflicting statements not only confuse people, but also bring disrepute to the position he is holding.
V.Balaji,
