Quota issue

Sir, __ The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's statement on constituting a commission to study and recommend reservation for the poor among the forward community ( May 27 ) has stirred the basic concept of the Article 16 (4) of our Constitution.

The main objective for providing reservation for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes in civil posts and services of the Government is not just to give jobs to some persons belonging to these communities and thereby increase their representation in the services but to uplift these people socially and educationally and make some place for them in society.

M.K. Luxman,
Ranipet, T.N.
