4,900 students write CET in Gulbarga

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA May 30. Nearly 4,900 students appeared for Common Entrance Test (CET) on Friday for admission to medical, dental, and engineering courses this year.

According to the Deputy Director of the Pre-University Education, R.M.Madalgeri, the CET was held in 11 centres — 10 in Gulbarga city and one in Yadgir. The total number of students participating in the CET this year was 4,896 and this was 1,000 less than the number of students who took the test last year. Lack of clarity and persisting doubts about the admission to the professional colleges through the CET and the exorbitant fee structures proposed had dampened the spirit of students from taking the CET this year.

Mr. Madalgeri said students from outside the State, including Orissa, Mahrashtra, and Andhra Pradesh were appearing for CET in Gulbarga. The CET was being held at Nutan Vidyalaya College, Godutai Dodappa Appa Women's College, B.B.Roza, Farhaan, National PU College, Milind PU College, Chandrakant Patil School, Government Independent Pre University College, M.S.Irani College, and Poojya Doddappa Appa Engineering College in Gulbarga city and Government Pre University College at Yadgir.

The police had stepped up security in and around the examination centres and the vigilance squad headed by senior officials drawn from different departments conducted surprise inspections at the centres. For the first time, the Deputy Director of Pre-University Education here was empowered to issue duplicate hall tickets to students who had applied for CET and had not received their hall tickets. Mr. Madalgeri said 200 students were given duplicate hall tickets by the directorate this year.
