Meet to throw light on ways to improve education system

BANGALORE MAY 30. A two-day Conference on "Improving the quality of education to meet global challenges and opportunities", organised by Quality+, was inaugurated by M.S.Thimmappa, Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore University, and R.Narasimha, Director National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), here on Friday. The conference intends to throw light on the various ways to improve the Indian education system.

Prof. Thimmappa felt that a conference such as this was essential. He also added that the development of a country depended on higher education.

Prof. Thimmappa said that knowledge was ``akhand'' but (it) was divided into various disciplines. The computer and the Internet could be alternative teachers. Prof. Thimmappa, who delivered the presidential address, said that "ensuring quality in education is to add value to the person — a value of culture, wholesomeness, of creativity and productivity.''

Prof. R.Narasimha spoke of the contradictions and dilemmas in the quality of education in India. He said that there was a difference between the quality of education provided by the Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) and the Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs), as compared to other institutions of higher learning.
