Disclosing the findings of the survey at a news conference here today, the deputy director of Education, V.K. Velayudhan, and the DIET director, J. Gomathy, said the number of dropouts in the district is 760 whereas their total number in the State is 24,000. They said the number of children who are not attending school in the district is high in the Chavakkad educational sub-district. There are many children in the same category at Athirappili and Peechi regions as well. Replying to questions, he said socio-economic problems and issues like child labour and physical handicap were found to be factors that were hampering the students from attending school. They said a time-bound action plan would be implemented to achieve the objective of `all children to schools this year.' Mr. Velayudhan said all school textbooks of this year would be distributed before June 10. Answering a query, he said the PP School at Punkunnam was the only school that was closed down in the district at the end of the last academic year. C.K. Balan, K.K. Shyamala and Mary Isaac were among those who addressed the press conference.
