Transport of fodder to AP banned

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY May 30. The Deputy Commissioner, S.N. Jayaram, has banned transport of fodder from the district to Andhra Pradesh. The ban follows the fear of failure of the monsoon this year too. The district is reeling under drought, and farmers foresee scarcity of fodder for their cattle.

Mr. Jayaram said 750 tonnes of fodder was available in the district. About 223 tonnes was being grown at the Kurekuppa Farm near Toranagal. Fodder was stored in seven places and steps would be taken to distribute it, depending on the situation.

He said the ban would not apply to transport of fodder within the State. Fodder would be supplied to Kolar and other districts facing scarcity.

Mr. Jayaram said a contingency plan was being prepared to tackle the drought situation in the district for three months. The plan would be implemented if it did not rain in the first fortnight of June.

The district was facing drought for the third year in succession, and the district administration had been making all efforts to provide relief to the people. For employment generation, Rs. 45 crore had been spent so far to provide employment to around 4.54 lakh people. As much as 31,000 tonnes of foodgrains out of the allotment of 38,000 tonnes had been distributed.

As many as 10,409 of the 14,603 works taken up under the scheme had been completed.

For drinking water supply, around 630 works, estimated at Rs. 2.9 crore, had been taken up. Of them, 612 had been completed.

The drinking water problem was not acute in the district. Works on rejuvenating, deepening, and repairing of borewells, mini drinking water schemes, and piped drinking water schemes had been speeded up.
