Abkari contractor, four others held

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM May 30. Five persons, including a leading abkari contractor, Sunil Kumar alias "China'' Sunil, and a suspended Excise Circle Inspector, Varghese, were taken into custody on Thursday amidst high drama by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the April 9 seizure of 18,135 litres of spirit from an illicit spirit godown at Pappanamcode in the city.

The five were taken into custody from near the Chengalchoola Fire Station around 12 noon by a team headed by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Shankhumukhom), Manilal.

Two Toyota cars in which abkari contractor and the team travelled are also in police custody.

According to the police, the office of the B-6 Holiday Resorts, owned by Sunil and located at Kannettumukku, near Mettukkada, was under surveillance for the past few days.

A police team lead by Mr. Manilal was filming the office using video camera at around 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Sunil and four others, who arrived in two cars on learning about this, objected to the filming of the office.

When the police team left in their car, the abkari contractor and his men chased them in two cars and waylaid them near the Fire Station at Chengachoola. Sunil reportedly rang up the Police Control Room informing that they had caught hold of a gang which was taking videos of women.

Following this, the Assistant Commissioner called up the Control Room and passed on the information that they had arrested Sunil and the others.

More police personnel were rushed to the spot from the Cantonment Police Station following a request for assistance.

The five accused, who tried to run away, were chased and taken into custody by the police immediately. Later, the police raided the office of the resort and the toddy shops of the abkari contractor.

On April 9, spirit, which was stored in 481 plastic jerrycans of 35-litre capacity, had been seized from the illicit spirit godown at Pappanamcode on a busy stretch of the National Highway 47.

The secret godown had been cleverly disguised as a terracotta artefacts manufacturing unit.

Three vehicles, including two Fiat cars and a Toyota Qualis van, which were found on the premises of the godown, had also impounded during the April 9 raid.
