In a statement here today, the association secretary, P.R. Walter, said that without a representation from the association the whole talks would be an exercise that smacks of prejudice and hence the decisions arrived at the same would not be recognised by the boat owners. In such a situation the association would be constrained to work towards enlisting support for the total fishing holiday scheme prepared by the Centre in the larger interests of preserving the marine wealth of the nation and its uncompromising implementation in the State, Mr. Walter said. The association had finalised plans for an agitation to press for the demand of implementing the total fishing holiday scheme in the State. As part of the plan, the association would be launching an ad hoc State-wide campaign to create political and social solidarity for the same, he said. It would also be assumed by the boat owners that the ban on trawling alone would mean a deliberate move by the State Government to help the mechanised traditional craft lobby under the label of traditional fishing. In such a situation the boat owners would be constrained to violate the ban and send the boats for trawling. The decision was taken at a special meeting of the association here presided over by the district president, M.S. James, Mr. Walter said.
