No limited overs games upto under-17 level: Panel

By Our Special Correspondent

LEGENDARY FOUR: Talk of spin and one instantly recalls the exploits of the Indian spinners Bhagwat Chandrasekhar (left), Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna and S. Venkataraghavan. Here the four share a lighter moment ahead of the spinners' meet in Kolkata on Friday.

KOLKATA MAY 30. The `brainstorming session' of the spinners' panel held here on Friday recommended that no limited overs cricket should be played upto the under-17 level.

The panel, comprising some of India's legendary spinners, felt that this would ensure the budding spinners develop the right technique at the formative stages.

Each member of the panel, indulging in a lively discussion on the rejuvenation of the art of spin in India, furnished his views.

The meeting was unanimous that a spin wing should be formed to spot and nurture talent at different age groups from under-15 to under-19 level.

This wing would function under the National Cricket Academy (NCA), headquartered at Bangalore.

The other recommendation was that talented spinners should be assembled in each zone at different age groups. The better ones, thereafter, could be taken to the spin wing of the NCA for further development. It was decided that a working group would be formed from among these panelists to work for the spin wing.

The third significant suggestion was procuring film/video footage of the past masters in action and to make educational films for spinners using the services of some of the panelists especially of the famous trio — Bishan Singh Bedi, E.A.S. Prasanna and Srinivas Venkataraghavan.

Speaking on the occasion, the Board president, Mr. Jagmohan Dalmiya, said the services of those who were not invited for today's meeting would also be utilised. "All the recommendations of the panel would be placed at the next working committee meeting to be held next month. By eight to 10 weeks, the Board hopes to begin the work to identify the talent,'' he said. The Board president said Anil Kumble, who is in South Africa with his family, assured to send his views after his return. The Board has called for a meeting of coaches and players of 27 states who played in the National championship for the Ranji Trophy. The meeting will be held on June 6 at Mumbai. "We have already received the views of most of the state teams on the new formation of Elite and Plate divisions in the Ranji Trophy and five teams in place of zonal squads in the Duleep Trophy. These views will be placed for further discussion in the presence of the chairman of the technical committee, Mr. Sunil Gavaskar, and the findings would be sent to the working committee for a decision,'' he said.
