Raju Mundamattom of the Kerala Congress(Joseph) defeated the Congress candidate, Koshy Thomas, by polling 18 votes in the 33-member council. The UDF has 15 members, the LDF 14 and the BJP four in the council. The UDF was in power and Mr. Varghese of the Kerala Congress(M) was elected chairman with the support of the four BJP councillors. He tendered his resignation a month ago on the basis of a post-poll understanding between the Congress and the KC(M) to share the five-year term. However, the failure of the UDF leadership to allot the `promised' two standing committee chairmen posts to the BJP in return of the latter's support failed the secret tie-up between the two. The issue became hot when the KC(M) man stepped down from the municipal chairman's post a month ago following pressure from the Congress to make way for the latter's nominee. Meanwhile, the BJP had insisted for the municipal vice-chairman's post for its support to the UDF in today's election. There were reports of both the LDF and the UDF chalking out their own game plan to win the BJP votes.
