Interlinking of rivers: plea to exclude Kerala

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM May 30. The Water Resources Minister, T.M. Jacob, has said that the State Government has asked the Centre to exclude Kerala from its proposed project interlinking the countries rivers.

Addressing a `Meet-the-Minister' programme, organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club and the State Public Relations Department, the Minister said that Kerala's inclusion in the project would only be detrimental to its interests. ''It is difficult to consider the proposal at a time when even linking the various Kerala rivers is an impractical preposition. The definition of a river itself was not clear and when compared to rivers in other state, Kerala had just three medium rivers. The annual discharge of these rivers together is just around 78,000 cusecs, while that of the Godavari alone is about 1 lakh cusecs,'' he observed.

The State Government has also informed the Centre that it was opposed to the proposed Pampa-Achankoil-Waipar project.

The survey conducted by the National Water Development Agency was more than 20 years old and this could not be accepted. Besides, diverting the rivers would serious affect the Vembanad lake and lead to its environmental pollution. Besides, river waters were state subjects and the Centre could unilaterally implement the project only at the cost of affecting Centre-State relations, he said.
