'Innalekalile Akasham' adjudged best drama

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM MAY 30. The State awards (2002) for best drama goes to `Innalekalile Akasham' staged by KPAC, Kayamkulam. Its director, Pamod Payyannur, gets the award for the best director.

The award for the second best drama is shared by `Ashtavakran' presented by Vadakara Sabha and `Mankolangal' presented by Pala Communications. Peesappilly Rajeev and Pirappancode Santha won the awards for best actor and actress respectively. They presented the roles of Bhima and Kuttimalu in `Mookanarthakan' and `Aksharappottanile' respectively.

The runner-up in acting are Muhammad Perambra (role of Kuttappachar in `Niranirayo Nira') and Sethulekshmi (role Parvathi in `Mankolangal').

The award for the best playwright goes to Rajan Kizhakanela who penned `Niranirayo Nira'. The second best is the play of Anil Bas who wrote `Aksharapotten'.

Pattanakkad Purushothaman (`Innalakalile Akasam') and Pramela (`Innalakalile Akasam' and `Niranirayo Nira') are chosen the best male and female singers respectively. S. Ramasan Nair (Niranirayo Nira) is the best lyrist. Sebi Nayarambalam (`Ashtavakran') gets the award for the best background score.

For stage direction, artist Sujathan wins the award (`Acharyadevobhava'). Best lighting was by Gopinath Kozhikode (`Niranirayo Nira').

The book `Malayala Sangeetha Nataka Charitram' by K. Sreekumar is chosen the best book published during the year on drama presentation or play writing. Vasu Pradeep (Kozhikode) will be honoured for his contributions to the growth of Malayalam stage. A special jury award will be given to Thrissur Gopalji for his role of Jadayu in `Ashtavakran'.

Announcing the awards, the Minister for Cultural Affairs, G. Karthikeyan, the chairman of the Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi, Kavalam Narayana Panicker, and the jury chairman, M.K. Sanu, said the jury had seen the presentation of 10 of the 32 drama entered for the contest. The script and videos recording of all the plays were seen before making the initial selection.

The jury noted almost all of the plays dealt with contemporary themes and highlighted the problems and hardships of the common man. Most were popular presentations that tried visual effects like cinema.

All the awards carried a statuette and citation besides cash prizes. The producers of best drama will get Rs. 15,000. Mr. Vasu Pradeep will also get the same amount. The amount for second best drama is Rs. 10,000. The other prizes range from Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 75,000.

The best book on drama was chosen by a jury comprising of M.V. Devan (chairman), M.V. Benny and Sukumari Narendra Menon. The main jury had K.R. Mohandas, N.K. Sebastian, Joshi Mathew and Kavil P. Madhavan as members.
