Chess
The idea of a New York-based organiser is to promote online chess and bridge boundaries and have a match on fifth Saturdays of each month. The organisers' press release says the next such match will be in August and November this year. Aarthie will become the second Indian and the first Indian lady to play an international match online. This match will start at Indian time 8.30 p.m. on Saturday, which is Chinese time 11 p.m. for Wang Yu. Each player will be given one black and one white for the two games. The time control will be semi-rapid with 15 minutes per player per game with an increment of ten seconds for making each move. Unlike Wang Yu who will play from her home, Aarthie had preferred to play the games from Chess Mate magazine office in south Chennai where S. Paul Arokia Raj of Port Trust will be the arbiter for the match. A lot of Indians and thousands of online chess lovers are expected to watch the games live on the Internet. They will play by logging into ICC (Internet Chess Club), the largest chess club in the world, which is on the internet at www.chessclub.com. Both players will receive nominal prize money for the two games. There will be no tie-break in case of a 1-1 tie. ``I have never played in the ICC before,'' said Aarthie last evening during the informal dinner of some select Chennai chess players which was held at the initiative of Viswanathan Anand. Aarthie has a rating of 2348 and Wang Yu is on 2359 on the rating list. The Chinese might be a slight favourite since she is more familiar at playing online games. Aarthie had just completed her exams last week and may not yet be in the chess mode. She confirmed that her marriage with British chess champion R.B. Ramesh is scheduled for August 29 this year. Organisers are finding new ways to promote chess and this is the new one in that line. Our Chess Correspondent
