Swamy welcomes `thaw' in Indo-Pak ties

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI MAY 30. The Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, has welcomed the "recent thaw in Indo-Pak relations". The steps taken by the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharaff, in releasing Indian prisoners and sending a team to discuss the Most Favoured Nation trade status for India, "are welcome gestures that he had indicated he would take when I met him last in January in Islamabad," Dr. Swamy said in a release.

However, Dr. Swamy cautioned the Prime Minister against seeking "to rush through a breakthrough in relations" with "... a lack of national purpose and sincerity". Mr. Vajpayee could not talk of a "partition" of Kashmir along the LoC without seeking Parliament's approval first.
