Gujarat
By Our Special Correspondent
The judge, K.M. Vin, did not accept Mr. Shetty's plea to stay the arrest warrant for 15 days to give him time to move the Gujarat High Court for anticipatory bail. The Surat police had earlier issued the arrest warrants against Mr. Shetty and his wife, Sunanda Shetty, on a complaint lodged by the owners of the Surat-based `Prafull' brand sarees. The complainant had claimed that the Shetty couple had been using the Mumbai underworld to threaten them for extortion of money. The sessions court felt there was a `prima facie' case of extortion against the Shettys and the anticipatory bail plea could not be accepted. The Shettys had earlier claimed that the mill owners had violated a contract with their daughter for endorsing their brand and made only part payment of the contract amount. The advertisement film was made five years back but so far the actress had not been paid fully. The owners alleged that they had receiving threatening calls from underworld dons on behalf of the Shettys and had denied any breach of contract.
