Highest temperature

CHENNAI MAY 30. Chennai today recorded the State's highest temperature in 93 years, with Nungambakkam registering 45 degree Celsius (113 degree Fahrenheit). The last time this temperature was recorded was on May 21, 1910, also in Nungambakkam.

The weather office said the "discomfort would continue till June-end," but the temperature would soon reduce to hover around the 40 degree Celsius (104 degree Fahrenheit) mark. An explanation for the soaring temperature was that the predominant northwesterly winds (or land winds) were not allowing the sea breeze to set in time.
