Girls continue to outshine boys

CHENNAI May 30. Continuing with their dominating performance in the State-level Standard X examinations, girls outdid boys in individual as well as overall merit lists in the SSLC, Matriculation, Anglo-Indian and OSLC examinations, the results of which were announced today.

Out of the 7,36,331 school-based and private candidates, who appeared for the SSLC examination in March, 78.2 per cent passed, up from 75.5 per cent last year. Among the successful candidates this year, 3.41 lakh boys and girls got 60 per cent or above in the aggregate. In all, 80.7 per cent of the girls and 75.7 per cent of the boys passed the examination.

Among the rankers too, girls came out on top. M. Asha Benazir of the Sarah Tucker Higher Secondary School at Palayamkottai, stood first with 494 marks out of 500, followed closely by S. Krishnapriya (493) of the SRM Government Girls HSS, Shencottah, and R. Sivasubramanian (493) of the Vivekananda HSS, Sellaperumalpet. M. Ilaval of the Amalorpavam HSS, Pondicherry, got 494 but he had taken French as the second language.

In the Matriculation stream, the pass percentage was 90.6 (girls: 89.8 and boys: 91.7). Of the 84,694 students who appeared, 63,231 got first class. Last year the pass percentage was 91 per cent (girls 92.7 and boys 89.6).

The rank list in the Matriculation stream was led by A. Kumar Rathnam of the S.Rajarajeswari Matric HSS, Kangeyam (1059 out of 1100), among those who had taken Tamil as the second language and by S. Shivaraj (1064) of the DAV Matriculation, Mogappair East, Chennai, among students who had taken a language other than Tamil.

In the Anglo-Indian School Leaving Certificate examination, 96.6 per cent of the 4,921 candidates passed (girls 97.1 per cent and boys 96). Last year the pass percentage was 97 (girls 98.2 and boys 95.9).

In the OSLC stream, 87.13 per cent of the 1,159 candidates passed.

Speaking to mediapersons, the Director of Government Examinations, C. Palanivelu, said 62,971 students failed in one subject, 34,975 in two subjects and 21,474 in three subjects in the SSLC examination. All of them were eligible to take supplementaries to be held from June 25.

For the first time, Dr. Palanivelu said, the results and marks of the private candidates too were released simultaneously. Individual mark certificates would be issued to all students, including private candidates, on June 11 and 12 through their schools/centres.
