CM terms Krishna remarks provocative

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD May 30. The war of words between the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and his Karnataka counterpart, S.M. Krishna, over the construction of projects across the Krishna and Pennar rivers appears to be hotting up.

In a strong reaction to Mr. Krishna's reported comments that the State Government better fight with the People's War instead of waging a war against Karnataka, Mr. Naidu termed it unfortunate and painful that Mr. Krishna made such "irresponsible'' remarks. "Being a constitutional head of the Government, the Karnataka Chief Minister should ensure that he makes responsible comments. But the statement made by Mr. Krishna about waging a war with the PW was irresponsible,'' he said.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, the Chief Minister criticised the Karnataka Government for violating all awards and judgments from time to time by taking up construction of projects at Paragodu and other places illegally. Coupled with this was the Karnataka Government's claim that the projects were only aimed at meeting the drinking water requirements of people. "The same Karnataka Government did not release a single drop of water from the Alamatti reservoir when the Andhra Pradesh Government sought its help in mitigating the drinking water shortage in the State. Mr. Krishna did not consider AP's request even on humanitarian grounds,'' he said adding the Government would, however, leave no stone unturned to ensure that farmers of Andhra Pradesh were not deprived of their due share of water.

When asked about the TDP's stand on the proposal for constituting a commission for reservation to economically weaker sections in the forward castes, he said that though there were poorer sections among forward castes, providing social justice of the SCs/STs and other under privileged sections was a major concern of the Government. .

When told that the Rajasthan Government had already announced its willingness to provide the reservations, he said that the announcement might have come in the light of the ensuing elections to the Assembly there.

Responding to queries over the proposed Jana Chaitanya yatras of the ruling party commencing from June 9, he said that it was the TDP which initiated the programmes for creating awareness among people by approaching them which was now being copied by others. The party was not in favour of padayatras as it had to ensure that the cadre reached out to every village in each constituency within a given time and interacted with people on their problems.
