Tirunelveli stays at the top

By P. Sudhakar

Tirunelveli May 30. The `Oxford of south India' has once again proved its supremacy, winning top ranks in the SSLC examination, the results of which were declared today.

Exactly a fortnight after two students of the Rose Mary Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai, won the top slots in the Plus-Two examination, two girls from the Sarah Tucker Higher Secondary School, hardly 500 meters away, secured the first and third ranks in the SSLC examination.

While M. Asha Benazir stood first with 494 out of 500 marks, B. Bhanupriya ranked third, with 492. The second place has gone to S. Krishnapriya (493) of the SRM. Government Girls' Higher Secondary School, Shenkottah.

All three girls say with one voice that they would become doctors to serve the poor.

Both the first and third rankers strongly support the idea of including an optional language in the school curriculum.

Benazir has completed BA in Hindi and Bhanupriya is appearing for a Pravin-level examination in August 2003.

Interestingly, Krishnapriya is an old student of the Sarah Tucker Higher Secondary School, where she did her primary schooling. "After my parents were transferred, we moved to Shenkottah," she said. Her father, Subramanian Pothi, is working as steno in a Tenkasi court and mother, Rathnavathi, is an assistant in the Shencottai Taluk office.

Benazir's father, Meeran Hussain, is working as a postal stores assistant in the head post office here and mother, Vasheela Fatima Begum, is a community health nurse at Ukkirankottai.

Her elder sister, Nisri Nisha is a practising lawyer in the Tirunelveli District Court.

"Her God-fearing quality and sincerity have elevated Benazir and she would conquer great heights in the years to come," says the class teacher, Roopavathi Selvakani.

Bhanupriaya's father is a professor in the Veterinary University Research Centre at Ramaiyanpatti, near here. Her sisters, Eswari and Kanimozhi, have completed MCA and BE..

An elated Tirunelveli Collector, Sunil Paliwal, said: "I am the happiest man in the district as our children have brought laurels to our district, bagging the top spots in the Plus-Two and the SSLC examinations. I am sure that the Oxford of south India is regaining its past glory".
