Bring Metrowater under Corporation: AIADMK member

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI MAY 30. Cutting across party lines, the Chennai Corporation councillors on Friday demanded that the Metrowater officials present a report every month to the elected council on the status of water supply to city residents.

Several councillors noted that the fall in water supply was among the burning issues the city faced along with the extreme temperatures. Since many tax payers still referred to public water supply as "Corporation water", the councillors had to bear the brunt of the complaints.

The ward 9 councillor, R.Ganapathy of the AIADMK, went a step further and suggested that Metrowater could be brought under the Chennai Corporation, amid thumping of tables. "At least that way, the councillors will be able to redress the water problem", he said.

The zone IX chairman, M. Subramaniam of the DMK said Saidapet was witnessing severe water scarcity. "Saidapet is already a tail-end region. Ever since the alternate day supply was announced by the Government, several parts of Saidapet have been reeling under water scarcity", he added. Mr. Subramaniam said even the joint committee meetings that the Corporation had with the Metrowater had not been possible over the last one and half years of the new council.

The ward 88 councillor, M.S. Farook Mohamed of Indian National League, blamed the lack of proper supply to Triplicane and adjoining areas to the Metrowater's delay in renewal of contract with water tanker operators. "The street supply to most parts of Triplicane has been severely affected. It is high time that the Corporation worked in close coordination with Metrowater", he added.
