According to a spokesperson of Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Ltd (TAAL) here, Sunil Shroff, managing trustee of the multi-organ harvesting aid network (MOHAN), a Chennai-based non-profit organisation, contacted the company on Friday. He said that Mohammed Ryela, a surgeon in the U.K., was arriving in Chennai and had to be flown immediately to Hyderabad for the transplant surgery. The brain-dead patient was declared physically dead on Saturday morning. Since the family wanted to donate his organs, they had to be removed immediately. Surgeons in Warangal removed the organs and brought them to Hyderabad by noon the same day. Meanwhile, TAAL received Dr. Ryela at the Chennai airport at 9.30 a.m. on Saturday and flew him to Hyderabad by a P68C twin-engine aircraft, usually chartered by corporates for top executives. Dr. Ryela landed in Hyderabad at noon, just in time to perform the transplantation. TAAL had to make special efforts to have the Hyderabad airport kept open for landing as the runway was being re-laid which meant that the airport was closed to air traffic between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. The air charter company has successfully operated more than 12 medical emergency flights over the past year. It has aircraft based in Pune, Nagpur, Bangalore, Chennai and Madurai.
