`Improve system to draw foreign students'

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE MAY 31. "Every year, hundreds of students from different countries throng India to pursue higher education. Unrecognised institutions, limited online accessibility, inadequate information regarding visa procedures, and outdated infrastructure are some of the problems they face. Educational institutes in India should improve the system to make the country a viable learning destination," the President of the Federation of International Students' Association, Sushil Chandran, has said.

Speaking at a conference on "Improving the quality of education to meet global challenges and opportunities" organised by "Quality+," Bangalore, Mr. Chandran said India had a great potential to become a global education destination, and by pursuing higher education here, international scholars would contribute to the local economy.

"It is also a great advantage for our Indian foreign policy and international relations," Mr. Chandran added.

The second day's session focussed on issues such as raising finance for higher education, improving the quality of teaching, modernising the infrastructure to improve quality of education, assessment of technical institutes by the National Board for Accreditation, the concept of total quality in education management, and quality input for "virtual postgraduate education".

Making a presentation on "Studying in India," Mr. Chandran listed the difficulties faced by international scholars in India, which included complicated admission procedures, bureaucracy, difficulty in getting jobs and work permits, and discouragement of study extension.

Mr. Chandran urged the educational institutions to take the necessary steps to alleviate these problems.
