White supremacist wanted in three cases held

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

Washington May 31. One of the most wanted criminals by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Eric Rudolph, has been captured by federal and state agents in North Carolina. Rudolph had been charged in the 1996 Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta as well as for attacks on an abortion clinic as well as a gay night club. He was arrested early this morning.

The Attorney General, John Ashcroft said the arrest sends a message to other fugitives as well. ``We will never cease in our efforts to hunt down all terrorists, foreign or domestic and stop them from harming the innocents'', Mr. Ashcroft remarked, while confirming Ruldolph's capture.

Rudolph who had been eluding arrest for the last several years has been on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List; and had a reward of $ one million on his head.

The 36-year-old Army veteran who is known to be a white supremacist was reported to be hiding in the mountains of North Carolina since 1998. Over the last five years occasional sightings had been reported but the fact that law enforcement officials turned up nothing gave the impression that perhaps Rudolph could have died as a result of the harsh outdoor conditions. Two years after the attack at the Centennial Olympic Park in 1996 that killed one person and injured more than 100, Rudolph was charged with it, along with the bombing of the nightclub and the abortion clinic.

In the three bombings two persons were killed. A native of Florida, Rudolph is said to come from a white supremacist background that is anti-gay, anti-semitic and anti-foreigner. Reports say that the bombs that he had planted for attacks included messages from the ``Army of God''.
