The President of JMS, K.Neela, told presspersons here today that the agitation was a follow-up to the dharna staged in front of Parliament House on May 24. She said that the committee, which studied the existing pattern of PDS and fixing of prices of foodgrains supplied under it, called for scrapping the system of supplying ration cards on APL (above poverty line) and BPL (below poverty line) basis, and suggested supply of cards to all poorer sections. The committee also recommended that the price of rice supplied under PDS should not cross Rs. 3 a kg., and wheat should be supplied at Rs. 2 a kg. to the poor. Ms. Neela said that the Union Government should also take steps to implement the directions of the Supreme Court to provide nutritious food to pregnant women and supply of ration cards to widows. A JMS delegation met the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, in Bangalore recently and submitted a charter of demands for improving the PDS system and streamlining the distribution of yellow and green ration cards. The delegation demanded that the Government include jowar, ragi, and red gram in the list of foodgrains supplied through PDS in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region.
