Cauvery ryots' meet this week

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE MAY 31. The second in the series of Cauvery Farmers' Dialogue, organised by the Madras Institute of Development Studies, will be held in Bangalore on June 4 and 5. The first dialogue held in Chennai on April 4 and 5 was attended by over 100 farmers, their leaders, academicians and NGOs from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu.

The leader of the Thanjavur delta farmers, S.Ranganathan, and the leader of farmers of the Cauvery Basin in Karnataka, Puttanniah, presented the views of agriculturists in their States.

A significant feature of the meeting was that the farmers' leaders as well as resource persons developed a long-term perspective and focussed on optimising the use of currently available water in the best possible manner for the benefit of all the riparian States.

They also emphasised the need for continuing the dialogue among farmers and to keep up the people-to-people contact. The meeting in Bangalore will be inaugurated by Justice D.M. Chandrasekhar and presided over by C.T. Kurien.

The key speakers will be the Frontline Editor, N. Ram, Satishchandra and the farmers' representatives, Mr. Puttanniah and Mr. Ranganathan. It will be held at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) on the IISc campus.
