Sonia's hint at alliance in U.P. welcomed

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MAY 31. The Samajwadi Party (SP) today welcomed the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi's indication that the party would not be averse to getting into possible alliances with the SP and other parties in Uttar Pradesh.

"This will have a far-reaching impact not only in U.P. but in the larger context of secular polity,'' the SP general-secretary, Amar Singh, told The Hindu.

"The BSP-BJP combine should have enough reason to worry,'' he added.

Responding to senior Congress leader, Arjun Singh's observations about the formation of a secular coalition, Mr. Amar Singh had said he would not take the statement seriously unless it came from the Congress president herself.

Responding to a question in Srinagar, Ms. Gandhi today said the Congress had an "open mind'' on alliances, sending out the signal that an alternative coalition to NDA was possible.
