'Shilpa's father absconding'

Mumbai May 31. Surendra Shetty, father of actress Shilpa Shetty, facing arrest in the case of alleged extortion is absconding since yesterday after a court in Surat rejected his bail plea, police said here today.

Mr. Surendra has been charged with `hiring' a gangster to recover Rs. 80 lakhs payable to his daughter by the owner of the Praful Saree Company, Pankaj Rawal, for modelling in an advertisement film.

Police arrived here this morning to arrest Mr. Surendra but he was not traceable. Shilpa Shetty was away in Bangalore for a film shoot, they said.

Meanwhile, Shilpa Shetty's mother, Sunanda Shetty, was today arrested and later released on bail. — PTI
