Villagers force naxals to beat retreat

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL May 31. In yet another incident of retaliation, extremists of People's War (PW) tasted the ire of villagers at Velpanur under Velugodu mandal in Kurnool district last night.

According to reports, around 15 armed extremists went to the village around midnight and encountered two persons on the outskirts. The two villagers were believed to be members of the village defence committee and were acting as guards. They escaped from the extremists on the pretext that they were returning from the fields. In a short time, they alerted the villagers who gathered in large numbers.

According to reports, the extremists entered the village with the intention of blasting the newly-built house of the MLA, Budda Sitarami Reddy. The villagers armed with sticks, sickles and stones tried to attack the extremists. One of the villagers threw three country-made bombs at the extremists. One bomb exploded scaring the extremists who left the village immediately.

A few days ago, the villagers at Vadlaramapuram under Atmakur mandal successfully repulsed the naxal attack and saved the villager from their clutches.

Paritala aide targeted: A report from Anantapur said PW naxalites blasted a farmhouse, a cattle shed and an irrigation borewell belonging to the Mandal Parishad President of Kanaganapalli, T. Prabhakar (TDP), at Kattakinda thanda near Tagarakunta village in the mandal around 2 a.m. on Saturday.

Prabhakar is a close associate of the Penukonda legislator, Paritala Ravindra. The house and about 85 bags of cement stored in it, some quantity of which belonged to the residents of thanda, were completely destroyed.

According to the police, about 10 armed naxalites went to the farm house, planted explosives and triggered them with the help of a remote. A team of policemen, who were on the picket at Tagarakunta, did not visit the blast site till this morning.

It is learnt that the PW has targeted Prabhakar on the charges of luring the surrendered militants and naxalites and making them police informers. The naxalites had also blasted Prabhakar's house at Tagarakunta last year on the same charge.

Naxalites blasted the house of a ruling Telugu Desam party leader, Katta Janardhan Reddy at Uppunuthala mandal headquarters of Mahabubnagar district in the small hours of Saturday.

According to the information reaching district headquarters, about 25 naxals went to the Janardhan Reddy's house around 1.30 a.m. and asked the inmates to come out and blasted the house consisting of 16 rooms by planting powerful explosives.

The naxalites were demanding the resignation of the leader from the primary membership of the TDP.

Recently the PW naxals blasted a house belongs to Ramakrishna Reddy a TDP leader in Achampet mandal. Following threats from naxals, already many Telugu Desam Party leaders in the Achampet Assembly constituency have resigned to their party primary membership.

Katta Janardhan Reddy, a senior leader in the party in Achampet Assembly constituency, has held various posts including Market Committee Chairman of Achampet, he was party mandal president for seven years and served 20 years as sarpanch.
