Nallakannu poser to DMK on BJP's violation of agenda

By Our Tamil Nadu Bureau

Mayiladuturai May 31. It is high time the DMK and the MDMK to pull out of the National Democratic Alliance as the BJP has `violated' the common NDA agenda `not to interfere in contentious issues', the CPI State secretary, R. Nallakannu, said today.

Claiming that the recent observations by the BJP president, Venkaiah Naidu, and the Liberhan Committee report submitted by the Centre in the Ayodhya case showed that the party had flouted the NDA agenda, Mr. Nallakannu said it was now up to the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, and the MDMK general secretary, Vaiko, to spell out their views on the stand taken by BJP in Ayodhya issue and also decide whether they should continue in NDA or not.

He was talking to reporters at Poompuhar, near here.

Asked about the AIADMK claims on `achievements in the last two years', Mr. Nallakannu said it was nothing but `two years of grief' for the people.

Reduction of financial aid to colleges, and stopping of new recruitments to fill up vacancies in government departments and educational institutions would affect the future generation and complicate the socio-economic situation in Tamil Nadu.

Already unemployment had assumed larger proportions, what with engineering and other professionally qualified persons trying their luck to get appointment as police constable.

To a question on the Cauvery issue, he said the State and Central governments should ensure that the upper riparian honoured the interim award of the tribunal.

The State Government must impress on the Centre the need for releasing more funds to compensate the loss suffered by farmers. ``If Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka can get additional amount for compensating the loss incurred by their farmers, why not Tamil Nadu'', he asked and urged the State Government not to fix a ceiling for eligibility to receive compensation and to extend the relief to all affected farmers.

Allocation meagre

Talking to presspersons in Tiruchi yesterday, Mr. Nallakannu termed the State Government's allocation of Rs. 324 crores for drought relief ``paltry'', and called for setting apart adequate funds to bring succour to the farming community.

On the Centre and the BJP deposing before the Liberhan Commission that a temple had existed at the disputed site before the construction of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya, Mr. Nallakannu said this stand was a violation of the NDA agenda.

The DMK, the MDMK and the PMK, constituents of the NDA, should tell the people whether they endorsed the Centre's view.
