Pulse polio drive today

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI MAY 31. The next phase of the Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme (PPIP) will be organised in the Capital this Sunday (June 1) under which all children up to the age of five years would be administered pulse polio drops.

In a statement on Saturday, the Delhi Health and Family Welfare Minister, A.K.Walia, said the programme was aimed at not only strengthening the immunity of children against polio but also to totally eradicate the polio virus so that future generations are safe from this crippling disease.

Dr.Walia announced that all preparations for the programme have been completed. Over 7,000 polio kendras have been set up in hospitals, dispensaries, schools, community centres, anganwadi centres and some private hospitals and nursing homes across the city. In addition, 300 mobile polio kendras have been deployed to cover children living in slum clusters and construction sites.

Polio kendras will also be set up at railway stations, inter-State bus terminals, airports and entry points of national highways besides entertainment centres for administering polio drops to travelling children. About 30,000 health personnel have been deployed for this programme and the kendras will function from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Dr. Walia asserted that there was no harm administering pulse polio drops to children under five years repeatedly and these were totally safe. Almost all countries in the world have become polio-free except four in which India is included. This has been achieved by administering polio drops to the children time and again. The World Health Organisation is eagerly waiting for the four countries to become polio-free so that the entire world can be declared free of the disease.

Dr. Walia appealed to all Delhiites to ensure that their children are given the all-important drops and also that their neighbours did the same.
