Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, in his interview to Der Spiegel, has said that "serious compromises" have to be made, for which confidence has to be built first. This includes economic cooperation and chances for people from both the countries to meet. Is it not a transparent feature of Indian democracy? What more does the West want other than this? It is up to Pakistan to utilise all initiatives taken by the Prime Minister. Pakistan must stop cross-border terrorism, dismantle terrorist camps and stop infiltration. In spite of all these measures, violence is continuing in Kashmir as a result of infiltration, as is rightly pointed out by N.C. Vij, Chief of the Army Staff.
S.Jehu Raju,
* * * Sir, Your Editorial `Another step forward' ( May 28 ) is apt. The steps taken by India and Pakistan are bound to be rewarding in the long run. Mischievous elements should not be given a chance to succeed in playing havoc and get the peace-process derailed.
K.D. Viswanaathan,
