SJM for consensus on NALCO privatisation

By Our Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR JUNE 1. Before the Centre goes ahead with the privatisation of the National Aluminium Company (NALCO), it should consult all the stakeholders, the co-convener of the Swadeshi Jagran Manch, S. Gurumurthy, said here today.

If the Orissa Government was opposed to the privatisation of NALCO, the Centre should initiate a dialogue with the State Government as well as other stakeholders to arrive at a consensus on the issue. "The State Government's view should be given precedence," Mr. Gurumurthy, who was here to attend a function to mark the end of a Swadeshi Sangharsh Yatra, said, adding that the Centre should adopt a different approach while privatising public sector undertakings in the backward regions.

On the privatisation of the Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), he said the company should not have been privatised at all in the first place. "Together, BALCO and NALCO could have formed a strong marketing conglomerate in the aluminium sector". Mr. Gurumurthy said he was not opposed to privatisation. The Government should opt out of some businesses where its involvement was not necessary. But it would be wrong to say that the Government should not be in business at all, he added.
