Route survey on for installation of anti-collision devices

By Mahesh Vijapurkar

MUMBAI JUNE 1. The Konkan Railway has taken up a survey of 3,339 route kilometres of the Indian Railways, mostly in the South, South-West and Northern Frontier regions, to enable the installation of anti-collision devises.

The survey on Friday covered the South-Western Railway's Vasco to Hubli section, covering 390 kms. The ACD includes a global positioning system mapping to enable satellite coverage of the route and identify shadow areas. Called the kavach (armour), it has been designed and developed by the Konkan Railway.

The microprocessor-based equipment has a digital radio modem for communication with other ACDs.

The ACDs alert the drivers when trains come within dangerous proximity on the same track. It was recently tested successfully on the Jalandhar-Amritsar section, before its implementation was announced in this year's Railway budget.

The Konkan Railway was set up to build a new network along the Western Coast of the country. This it did in record time, cutting down both time and distance. It later took to developing new technologies, including a Skybus for urban transport.
