Cong. has conceded defeat: BJP chief

RAIPUR JUNE 1. The BJP president, M. Venkiah Naidu, said today that the Congress announcement that it was open to a "grand alliance" before the next general elections indicated that it had conceded defeat before the polls.

At a press conference here before flagging off the Chhattisgarh party unit's "Parivartan Yatra" — a State-wide campaign being organised in the run-up to the November Assembly elections — he said the Congress had always maintained that there was no need for any coalition as it could provide a stable government by itself.

The BJP would not form an alliance with any party in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi. It would contest all the seats in these States, he said.

Asked about the demand for the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani's resignation in the wake of the CBI filing a chargesheet against him in connection with the Babri Masjid demolition case, he said: "Why should anyone resign? It is not a case of any moral turpitude. It is a case arising out of a political movement. Several leaders are facing such cases".

On the peace initiatives vis-à-vis Pakistan, he said the success of the talks rested with Islamabad, which should create an atmosphere conducive for that. He denied the Congress allegation that the Vajpayee Government was inconsistent with its policy on Pakistan. — UNI
