Landmine detected near rally venue

Srinagar June 1. Hours before the scheduled visit of the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, to Baramulla in north Kashmir, security forces detected a landmine on the Srinagar-Baramulla national highway this morning, official sources said here.

The mine was detected around 8 a.m. near the Flood Complex at Khawajabagh on the highway, the sources said. The Flood Complex is 500 metres from the venue of the public meeting to be addressed by Ms. Gandhi and several Chief Ministers of Congress-ruled States who were here for the two-day conclave, which ended yesterday.

Security forces and police later defused the landmine, the sources said. — PTI
