Bad luck for Rushmi in Surbiton

NEW DELHI JUNE 1. Europe seems to refuse a strong foothold for Indian players. While it was Sanaa Bhambri who fell and hurt her knee, and limped out of the clay court in the Astrid Bowl junior event in Belgium last week, it was the 400th ranked Rushmi who hurt her wrist and thumb as she fell on grass in the $25,000 ITF women's circuit event in Surbiton.

Rushmi led 4-2 in the tiebreak against the 14th seeded Beti Sekulovski of Australia, when she fell in front trying to retrieve a drop shot on the slippery grass. Rushmi's thumb came between the racquet and the body.

``I couldn't hold my racquet thereafter and it pains very much. The x-ray confirmed that there was no fracture, but it is swollen and hurts badly,'' said Rushmi, when contacted in the United Kingdom. She retired at 6-7 (4-7), unable to compete in the second set.

It was the first tournament in a series of events that Rushmi had planned for the season. Though disheartened, Rushmi hoped to recover from the injury soon.

Rushmi's fellow officer in Indian Oil, Sai Jayalakshmy suffered a 3-6, 3-6 defeat at the hands of the 216th ranked third seed Kelly Liggan of Ireland, in another first round in the qualifying event.

With Rushmi hurt, Sai has apparently not been able to find another doubles partner.

With the European players staying home, and keeping away from the SARS affected countries, the standard of tournaments has been very demanding this season.
