Sri Lanka dominates show

COLOMBO june 1. Olympic medallist Susanthika Jayasinghe and Asian Games triple gold medallist Damayanthi Darsha won the women's 100-metre and 400-metre events respectively, as host Sri Lanka dominated the second leg of the Asian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Besides Jayasinghe and Darsha, two other Sri Lankan athletes secured first places — Rohan Pradeep Kumara Fernando (men's 400 metre) and J.M.S. Jayaweera (men's 3,000 metre).

Jayasinghe had been hospitalised on Friday for dehydration after returning from the Indian leg of the series. But the determined 28-year-old sprinter got off to an impressive start and ran the last 50 metres unchallenged, to win her second title in the series.

She clocked 11.53 seconds. Uzbekistan's Khubbieva Guzel (11.70) finished second.

Asian championship double gold medallist Fernando beat compatriot and former Asian Games gold medallist Sugath Tillakaratne, who took second place. Fernando clocked 46.31 seconds. Fellow teammate Prasanna Amarasekara (46.81) came third in the 400-metre. Sri Lanka also won the first five places in the men's 3,000-metre event.

Having lost the first leg meeting to Svetlana Bodritskaya of Kazakhstan, Darsha had complete control in winning the 400-metre race in Colombo.

The Asian Grand Prix circuit travels to Bangkok, Thailand, on June 5 before concluding in Manila, Philippines, on June 9.

100m: 1. Chernivol Gennaidy (Kazakhstan) 10.60s;. 2. S.P.N. Hemantha (Sri Lanka) 10.84; 3. Sanjay Ghosh (India) 10.86.

110 hurdles: 1. Narongdech Janjal (Thailand) 14.35s; 2. Mohammed Muhd Faiz (Malaysia) 14.43; 3. Indika Kumara de Silva (Sri Lanka) 14.45.

800m: 1. Mohammed O.A. Al Sathi (Saudi Arabia) 1:47.98s; 2. Kolgnov Mikhail (Kazakhstan) 1:48.16; 3. P.W.G.M. Pushpakumara (Sri Lanka) 1:48.31.

3,000m: 1. J.M.S. Jayaweera (Sri Lanka) 8m 18.38s; 2. K. Chandradasa 8:22.54; 3. G.S.P. Mendis (Sri Lanka) 8:25:89.

Women:

100 hurdles: 1. Roberts Triscia (Thailand) 13.42s; 2. Sriyani Kulawansa (Sri Lanka) 13.59; 3. Soma Biswas (India) 14.68.

800m: 1. Roslanova Tatyana (Kazakhstan) 2m 3.80s; 2. Borisov Iatyana (Krygykhstan) 2:04.28; 3. Amireva Zanura (Uzbekistan) 2:06.63.

Shot put: 1. Du Xianhui (Singapore) 18.7m; 2. Zhang Guirong (Singapore) 17.47; 3. Karaeyan Juthaporn (Thailand) 16.27. — AP
