Marad massacre

Sir, — This refers to V.R. Krishna Iyer's article `The Marad massacre' ( May 31 ). As he puts it, communalistic violence in any form is blood thirsty and cruel. We witnessed large-scale violence in Gujarat recently, the blame being on the Hindus. One wonders whether such sudden (though well-planned) carnages are due to the loss of essential human values. Marad is everywhere and no State can claim innocence.

We are moving towards a world bereft of values. One possible solution is to go back to the past and revive the traditional values of compassion, sacrifice and universal brotherhood. School textbooks and other communication media could be used to propagate value-bearing messages. It is time we prevented the "apes from inheriting the earth'.

P.V. Ramachandran,
Chennai
