Diplomatic slip?

Sir, — This refers to your front page report ( June 3 ) of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's news conference. Imagine a head of Government being ignorant of such a basic thing as the teetotaller status of the President of the United States. I knew it; my colleagues know it, yet it slipped the notice of our foreign affairs advisers while briefing our PM. How can we expect ourselves to be taken seriously in the world with such lapses in diplomatic intelligence? No attention to detail — cry my beloved country.

Aryaman Bharat,
Kodaikanal, T.N.
