Court bifurcation

Sir, — The article "Bifurcation of the Supreme Court" is indeed thought-provoking and convincing.

The parliamentary standing committee, being political, has its own compulsions to recommend and favour the setting up of regional benches outside Delhi, perhaps to instil a sense of oneness in the minds of the people and to enable easy access to the apex court.

Although the Constitution provides that the Supreme Court shall sit in Delhi or in other places at the instance of the Chief Justice of India and the President, it does not clearly say whether a Bench of the Supreme Court can be established in any other place apart from the principal court of sitting. Setting up of regional Benches would open more and more claims, which may result in the erosion of authority of the court, besides involving a heavy expenditure.

K.T. Thimmareddy,
Bangalore
