Schemes for hospital waste disposal

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JUNE 4. The Minister for Health, P. Sankaran, said here on Wednesday that facilities for disposal of hospital wastes would be set up at Nooranad, Koratti and Pariyaram.

The Minister told presspersons that the facilities would be built by the private sector on build-operate-and-transfer (BOT) basis.

The Indian Medical Association was proposing to set up facilities at Thodupuzha, Parippally and Palakkad.

Mr. Sankaran said that steps were being taken to check sound pollution. The police had been entrusted with the task of controlling the use of loudspeakers. The Motor Vehicles Department was to keep tag on noise produced by motor vehicles and the State Pollution Control Board by industries.

Pollution control awards

The Minister announced that the Kochi Refineries, Ernakulam, and the Hindustan Newsprint, Velloor, were the winners of the State Pollution Control Awards for large industries this year. The refinery won the first place and the Hindustan Latex took the second place.

Among the medium-scale industries, the K.K. Rocks and Granites India, Malayam, Thiruvananthapuram, secured the first place, the Malabar Regional Cooperative Milk Producers Union, Kunnamangalam, the second place and Marari Beach (Hotel), Mararikulam, the third place.

The Meenachil TSBR factory, Koodalloor, Kottayam, Basil Granites, Poovachira, Thrissur, and the Gala Ice Creams, Elamannoor, Pathanamthitta, won the first, second and third places respectively for small industries.

The newly introduced awards for hospitals went to the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (first place) and the Baby Memorial Hospital, Kozhikode (second place), in the category of hospitals with more than 200 beds. The Dhanya Mission Hospital, Chalakkudy, and the Unity Hospital, Kunnamkulam, secured the first and second places for hospitals with less than 200 beds.
