Letters to the Editor
Sir, There cannot be a greater folly than hosting any conference, seminar, workshop or symposium at Tirupati during the summer months; worse is a conclave of a political party; its highest peak is the plenary session of a ruling party. For good or bad and wisely or unwisely, the pilgrims, mostly from the lower and middle classes opt to visit Tirumala during summer. The Telugu Desam in Andhra Pradesh recently held its plenary session at Tirupati. When lakhs of pilgrims were labouring for a "darshan" for a few seconds, hundreds of official delegates of the TDP and multiples of their followers and henchmen made a beeline to the sanctum sanctorum, inconveniencing the pilgrims. Political parties must avoid such meetings that inconvenience pilgrims. In default, the Election Commission could prohibit political conclaves at pilgrim centres.
